International New Arrivals


On arrival at the Academy, International New Arrivals are assessed to provide information to assist in preparing a support programme for students. The Student Welfare Manager places the student in a Tutor Group and Teaching Set, buddied with a student, preferably one who can speak the same language.


Once the student is settled into school, a language intervention programme is introduced according to need. This may include a reading scheme, reinforcing phonics and a language programme to develop vocabulary and simple grammatical structures. Activities help to develop spoken and written language.


A key worker is allocated from the Hub to support the student, during the early settling in period, providing a nurturing comfortable environment in which to develop confidence.
