The Ace Academy Careers Policy – May 2015

Rationale

Every child should leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. This means ensuring academic rigour supported by excellent teaching, and developing in every young person the values, skills and behaviours they need to get on in life. All children should receive a rich provision of classroom and extra-curricular activities that develop a range of character attributes, such as resilience and grit, which underpin success in education and employment. High quality, independent careers guidance is also crucial in helping pupils emerge from school more fully rounded and ready for the world of work. Young people want and need to be well-informed when making subject and career decisions.

 

Commitment

At The Ace Academy the delivery of a programme of careers education, information, advice and guidance (IAG) for all students in years 7 – 13, is viewed as a fundamental part of the curriculum.  The programme is constantly updated to ensure we are meeting the demands of the changing economy and in line with the most up to date statutory guidance (currently march 2015).

Ace Academy is working towards the Gold award for the quality of CEIAG through prospects.

 

Aims

The aims of our Career Information Advice and Guidance Programme is

  • to contribute to strategies for raising achievement, especially by increasing motivation and to focus students on their future aspirations
  • to encourage participation in continued learning including higher education and further education
  • to support inclusion, challenge stereotyping and promote equality of opportunity
  • to develop enterprise and employment skills
  • to improve retention and course switching in education and training
  • to contribute to the economic prosperity of individuals and the local community
  • to involve parents and carers

 

The Academy aims;

  • to provide a structured and coherent course to prepare students for the choices, changes and transitions affecting their future education and continued education and training.
  • help students understand their individual strengths and weaknesses, aspirations and potential and to identify their personal career targets, skills, interests and values by recording and building on achievement
  • develop in students an appreciation of the rapidly changing world of work and what it offers, and to develop an understanding of the range of opportunities and levels of entry
  • enable students to make a smooth transition from school to Further or Higher Education, Apprenticeships employment or voluntary work.
  • provide all students with the opportunity and skills to make confident, informed choices about lifelong learning. The school’s careers led programme should improve employability, increase social mobility and raise achievement.
  • ensure students acquire an understanding of the structure of the decision-making process so enabling them to make realistic and informed decisions

 

The Academy will do this by;

  • providing access to a range of activities that inspire, including employer talks, careers fairs, motivational speakers, colleges and university visits, coaches and mentors.
  • Building strong links with employers who can help to boost students attitudes and employability skills, inform pupils about the range of roles and opportunities available and help them understand how to make this a reality.
  • offering high quality work experience that properly reflects individuals’ studies and strengths, and supports the academic curriculum.
  • ensuring pupils have access to advice on options available post-16, for example, apprenticeships, entrepreneurialism or other vocational routes alongside the more traditional A levels and university route.
  • providing face-to-face advice and guidance to build confidence and motivation.
  • Working with local authorities to identify vulnerable young people, including those with special educational needs and those at risk of not participating post-16, and the services that are available to support them.
  • providing information to students about the financial support that may be available to help them stay in education post-16.
  • consciously work to prevent all forms of stereotyping in the advice and guidance they provide, to ensure that boys and girls from all backgrounds and diversity groups consider the widest possible range of careers, including those that are often portrayed as primarily for one or other of the sexes.

 

Links with other Policies

It supports and is underpinned by key school policies including those for Teaching and Learning, Assessment, Recording and Reporting Achievement, Citizenship, PSHE, SMSC, Work Related Learning and Enterprise, Equal Opportunities and Diversity, Health and Safety, Gifted & Talented and Special Needs.

 

Implementation of Careers Education

Careers Education is delivered during collapsed timetable sessions in Years 8– 11, with the support of local businesses and outside agencies.  CEIAG and Enterprise is a pillar in our year 7 solace programme.

 

Equality and Diversity

Careers education is provided to all students and provision is made to allow all students to access the curriculum. Students are encouraged to follow career paths that suit their interests, skills and strengths with the absence of stereotypes. All students are provided with the same opportunities and diversity is celebrated.

 

Parents and carers

Parental involvement is encouraged at all stages. Online resources have been specifically chosen to help parents become more involved. All online resources are easily accessed through the links on the school website. Parents are kept up to date with careers related information through letters, newsletters and at open evenings. Parents are welcome at careers interviews and where necessary are invited.

 

Management

A named member of staff co-ordinates the Careers programme and is responsible to his / her senior management line manager.

 

Staffing

All staff contribute to CEG through their roles as tutors, subject teachers, para-professionals administrative staff and other support staff.

 

Partnerships

To ensure the delivery independent advice and guidance, the school works closely with a number of organisations including;

Sandwell connexions service, Prospects, Sandwell Think Local, Local training providers and colleges, the school is part of the ECMAT Academy chain  and so has support from Wolverhampton University.  We have many links with Businesses as shown on the school web-site

Links with parents / carers are maintained using a variety of methods (parental leaflets, letters, parents evening options evenings, Post 16 Evenings).

 

Resources

 

Monitoring Review and Evaluation

Careers Guidance is monitored and evaluated annually through discussion with key staff and pupils and appropriate observation of activities by the Line Manager. Vice Principal Stake holder engagement

The programme is reviewed annually by the Director of Business and Industry Links and his / her Leadership Team Line Manager

First destinations of leavers will also be monitored as will statistics relating to students in the Sixth Form and those progressing into Further Education and Higher Education.

The Governors’ Learning & Curriculum Committee, on behalf of the Governing Body, will monitor and undertake a triennial review of this policy.

Link Governor to work with the Director of Business and Industry Links and IAG staff to review careers led education within the School.

When reviewing the programme, the School Improvement Plan (SIP) is used to ensure that Work Related Learning fully supporting whole school aims.

Implementation of Careers Guidance

  1. A programme of careers days/tutor sessions for each year group, based on age and needs.
  2. Dedicated careers staff for each Key Stage co-ordinating the programme, always seeking to meet students’ needs, available for pupils to speak to by drop in, appointment or set sessions
  3. Careers library  - that has a wide range of materials, open throughout the school day, situated in the main library
  4. Prospects and Connexions Advisors available in the careers office one day per fortnight for all pupils either by appointment or drop in
  5. A range of useful web-sites and software available (links on school web-site) including Kudos, Plotr,
  6. A Range of Work Related Learning experiences, challenge days with a variety of Businesses and external organisations
  7. Subject specific careers links, bringing careers to the classroom
  8. Regular visiting speakers from a range of Businesses to discuss career pathways and give independent advice on how to access careers in their industry.
  9. All year 12 pupils undertake a regular work placement
  10. Optional work experience for year 10 pupils

 

For Students

CEIAG  programme will help you to:

  • Understand yourself, your interests, likes and dislikes, what you are good at and how this affects the choices you make
  • Find out about different courses, what qualifications you might need and what opportunities there might be
  • Develop the skills you may need for working life
  • Make realistic, but ambitious, choices about courses and jobs
  • Develop a plan of action for the future
  • Understand the different routes after Year 11 including training, further and higher education and jobs
  • Be able to make effective applications for jobs, training and further and higher education
  • Develop your interview skills
  • Improve your confidence

You will receive:

  • Careers lessons via collapsed days
  • Collapsed registration activities
  • Guided tutor time
  • Access to the careers library – information is available in books, videos, leaflets and on computer – ask for help
  • Interviews with the Personal Adviser
  • Optional Work experience
  • Other subject lessons linked to careers

You can expect to be:

  • Treated equally with others
  • Given careers information and advice that is up to date and impartial
  • Treated with respect by visitors to the school who are part of the careers programme
  • Given extra help if you have special needs
